Florida is like a home for natural disasters. Tropical storms, tornadoes, and floods regularly visit Sunshine State. During the hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 to November 30, there is a great risk of disasters. They are characterized by powerful winds, torrential rain, formation of high waves, and tornadoes. So it’s always better to be well prepared.

Start with a hurricane survival kit, which includes 6 main supplies: Water, Food, First aid supplies, Clothing and bedding, Tools and emergency supplies, and Special items.

The container should be waterproof and unbreakable.

Make sure that the contents of your container include these important items:

Water. An average person needs two quarts of water each day, though hot weather may double this amount. Use plastic containers instead of fragile ones.

Food. Store a three-day amount of food. Choose foods that do not need refrigeration or cooking. Include canned juices, high-energy foods, salt, sugar, pepper, ready to eat canned meats, vegetables, and fruit.

First aid kit. You should prepare a first aid kit for home and each car. Include:

• Sterile adhesive bandages of different sizes
• Cleansing soap
• Nonprescription drugs
• Latex gloves
• Antiseptic
• Thermometer
• Scissors

Clothing items should include:

• Change of clothing
• Change of footwear
• Rain gear
• Sleeping bags
• Hat and gloves
• Sturdy shoes

Tools and Supplies

• Paper cups, plates, plastic utensils
• Cash or travel checks
• Compass
• Flashlight
• Battery-operated radio and extra battery
• Paper and pencil

Special items. Think about family members with special requirements such as children, the elderly or the disabled, and take the supplies they will need in an emergency situation. For example, food for babies, heart and high blood pressure medication, or prescription drugs for adults.

Also, prepare a waterproof container with important documents such as passports, insurance policies, social security card, credit card account numbers etc.

Fill your vehicle’s gas tank frequently and prearrange for a place to stay in case there is an evacuation.

Finally, remember to take care of your house.

• Close all the doors and windows, including garage doors. Move yard decoration indoors to a safe place.
• Disinfect your bath and fill it with tap water.
• When a hurricane comes stay indoors and keep away from windows and doors. Do not travel and do not stay in your car. Find the safest place to stay such as a closet or bathroom. Listen to instructions on a battery-powered radio.

In case of first aid situation call 911 and use their instructions. Check pulse and how the injured breathes. If a person doesn’t breath, perform CPR. While you are waiting for medical help, collect as much information about the injured as you can to help doctors. Do not administer medication yourself. Do not move the injured unless the person is in a dangerous place. Stay calm as you have all the needed medication in a survival kit.
